Chapter 6

Shuffling and scrambling shakes somewhere in the back of my skull, but I can’t quite figure it out yet. Oh, I’m so warm, but something’s wrong. Oh hell, where’s Jace? My eyes open and snap closed really quick when the sunlight hits them. Ugh…even with eyes shut tight, the daylight shines through my lids, from the open window. I give up.

Edging my way up to a sitting position, Jace runs through the room like lightning.

“Morning, babe, you’re up early, I think. What time is it?” I wipe the crusty crud from my eyes and laugh at him.

I must have scared the shit out of him because he drops one of his shoes he was holding and goes into bouncing on one leg, while trying to shove his foot in the other shoe he’s still hanging onto.

“Don’t do that, dammit, scare me like that.”

“Sorry,” I pout.

He’s never rude like that and I guess he catches on to that.

“Awe, I’m sorry, Reese. I don’t mean to be snappy, but I got woke up to my phone going off, over and over and over.”

I hear the bell from the microwave go off and he races out of the room, still wearing only one shoe, then returns with his Styrofoam container of leftovers from last night and plops on the bed next to me. He pops the lid open and steam bellows out, along with the smell of Mexican food, which at first whiff almost makes me gag, then suddenly swaps gears and makes my stomach growl.

“Who called you so early on a weekend?”

“Want a bite?” He offers me a piece of enchilada off the end of his fork. I just wave my hands out in front of me, letting him know no-way. “Oh, and it’s nine thirty.” He shovels in half the plate and downs it along with a gulp of coke to chase it.

“I don’t like waking up without you next to me, if jacks with my weekend mojo factor.”

“Oh sorry. It was Geoff calling, good and bad news. Good news is if I can handle and check in on seven bank branches by tomorrow, I get promoted to district manager. Bad news is I’m going to prove I can do it which means I’ll be working till midnight tonight and tomorrow night and running myself into the ground to do it.”

“Look at you climbing the corporate ladder, lovie dovie. I’m so proud of you, but isn’t district manager Geoff’s job now?” I sit up Indian fashion and take a nacho off his plate.

“Well yes, but he got a call this morning, and was offered the regional manager position over like twenty branches. He’s psyched about it and it’s a great opportunity for the both of us.” He puts the tray down by me and gets up.

“Isn’t this kind of sudden though?” I take another chip off his platter. “Did something happen?”

“Yeah, remember the main guy I told you was a total prick? Well, he got caught with his hand way too far in the till and was fired at the ass crack of dawn this morning.
